Back Problems
Back problems manifest themselves in many ways, with pain in the affected area or referred pain and other symptoms in the legts and arms.
Back problems can be attributed to a variety of causes, including:.
- Holding the head at an awkward angle for a prolonged period of time (such as trying to read small text on a screen or document).
- Frequent twisting of the neck in order to read source documents.
- Awkward sitting posture.
- Frequent and prolonged use of laptop or notebook computers.
Twisting the head and neck to view source documents can contribute to back pain and discomfort.
Possible accommodations for back problems can include:
- Adjusting how you view source documents.
- Adjusting how you use a laptop or notebook computer.
- Applying ergonomic principles to your seating and positioning.
- Adjusting how you view a computer monitor.
Sometimes a back problem can result in an inability to sit for anything longer than a short period of time. Such situations require a solution whereby the computer operator can change the workstation from sitting to standing. On other occasions, some people are unable to sit at all, needing to work from a reclined position.
