Finger Problems
The fingers often show symptoms of problems that are actually caused in other areas of the body. Problems in the wrists, elbows and shoulders can cause symptoms in the fingers.
Finger pain and discomfort may not be the first sign of a problem. In a condition such as carpal tunnel syndrome, the first signs of a problem can be:
- Fingers feel numb
- Fingers tingle or have a "burning" sensation
- Fingers feel "swollen" even though they do not appear swollen
- Fingers have trouble picking up or holding small objects
The following factors may contribute to finger pain and discomfort:
- Repetitive movements of the fingers (such as in keyboarding).
- Prolonged holding and clicking of the mouse.
- The manner in which you type. Those who have a habit of striking the keyboard hard will have a greater tendency towards finger pain.
- How you hold your arms while keyboarding.
Pounding the keys can contribute to finger pain.
Possible accommodations for finger problems can include:
- Using a different keyboard.
- Using a different mouse.
- Applying ergonomic principles to your seating and positioning.
