Thumb Problems
The thumb can be the cause of pain and discomfort while operating a computer. Some overuse symptoms of the thumb are felt at the wrist where various thumb tendons travel. Some common causes of thumb discomfort are prolonged mouse use, where the mouse is being held between the thumb and the 4th and 5th fingers, and aggressive striking of the space bar with the thumb.
Thumb problems can include:
- Tingling.
- Weakness, such as difficulty picking up and holding things.
- Numbness.
- Pain, in the thumb or back or side of the wrist.
Possible accommodations for wrist problems can include:
- Using a different keyboard.
- Using a different mouse.
- Applying ergonomic principles to your seating and positioning.
