Technology Solutions > Keyboarding or Typing > Left-Handedness

The only difference between the standard keyboard and a keyboard designed for people who are left handed is the placement of the numeric keypad and cursor control keys on the left side of the keyboard, instead of the right side. This enables numeric keypad entry to be done with the left hand.

The numeric keypad can be either mirrored or non-mirrored. A non-mirrored keypad appears exactly as it does in the standard, right hand orientation, where the top row of keys is 7, 8, 9, with the 7 under the index finger. A non-mirrored keypad means that the left handed operator is pressing the 7 with their 4th finger (ring) rather than their index finger.

A mirrored numeric keypad reverses the sequence of keys such that the top row is 9, 8, 7, placing the 7 under the index finger just as it is for right-hand use.

NOTE: Recently, there has been a reduction in the availability of mirrored numeric keypads.
